For the latest in home comfort technology and efficiency, count on New Berlin Heating & Air Conditioning to keep you informed. This includes the use of a brand-new refrigerant, R-454B. It’s designed to gradually replace the refrigerant that’s currently used in HVAC equipment. What does that mean for you? Our experts share the answer—as well as what’s driving this switch—in the blog below. Call us with questions about new or existing HVAC equipment at 262-784-8889.
What Is HVAC Refrigerant?
Refrigerant is a crucial part of an air conditioning system. It works by absorbing heat and converting it to cool air by changing from liquid to gas and back (with the help of your air conditioner’s other components). This compound is a crucial element to keeping your home cool and comfortable. Over the years, air conditioners have used several types of refrigerants, many of which have been phased out due to harmful environmental effects—such as contributing to global warming. The type of refrigerant your system uses depends on when it was manufactured.
How Is R-454B Different Than Other Refrigerant?
The new R-454B refrigerant is more energy efficient than existing options and has a lower GWP (Global Warming Potential). And because it uses electricity, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Carrier®, which is the manufacturer of New Berlin Heating’s preferred HVAC equipment, was the first to announce their plans to switch to R-454B, which they call Puron Advance™, back in 2018. The company recently launched a single-stage heat pump that already uses R-454B. It also has plans to eventually replace existing refrigerants in all Carrier ducted and ductless residential and light commercial products.
What Does the Switch Mean for You?
There are a couple of ways this benefits you. The higher energy efficiency of R-454B refrigerant can lower your energy bills. That means you’ll spend less on utilities for the same amount of cooling power. And with a more environmentally friendly footprint, you can also feel good knowing that running your A/C won’t have a negative impact.
It’s important to note that starting in 2025, regulatory standards will eventually require newly manufactured equipment to use R-454B due to its more environmentally friendly aspects. But if your home has an air conditioner that uses a different type of refrigerant, these new regulations will not affect your system. As existing refrigerants become harder to find, however, repairs can become more expensive. You may want to consider switching to a system that uses R-454B.
