What Can Cause a Furnace to Stop Working?

Start With Your Circuit Breaker

As simple as this fix might sound, sometimes the answer to a furnace not working is as easy as resetting a tripped breaker. Head to your circuit box and make sure the furnace’s breaker is in the “on” position. If you find the switch stuck in the middle, flip if off, wait a few seconds, then push it back on. While you’re at it, make sure that your heating system’s switch is on, too.

Turn to the Thermostat

There are a few easy ways to test whether your thermostat is the culprit of your heating headaches:

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to “heat”
  • Turn the temperature up a few degrees to see if your furnace responds
  • Replace the batteries and retry the above steps

Change Your Air Filter

Your air filter plays a big role in helping prevent airborne contaminants from flowing through your home. But over time, those pollutants build up on the filter, which can prevent heat from circulating. Swap out your filter right away to let air pass through your ducts—and remember to change it every one to three months to prevent any future blockages.

Check Your Air Vents and Ducts

You might think that closing vents in rooms you don’t use will help you heat the rest of your home, but that actually does more harm than good. When you block off rooms, your furnace will work extra hard to push air past the blockages. Not only can that affect how well the system heats your home, but it also puts more stress on the furnace and can cause it to break down.
