Along with warmer weather, summer can bring an increase in humidity, both outside and in your home. At New Berlin Heating & Air Conditioning, we want to help you fix that. Below, we’re sharing some of our favorite ways to reduce home humidity and keep you comfortable. Read them over, then call us at 262-784-8889 when you’re ready for the first two on our list.
Ideal Home Humidity Levels
Though you might think of humidity as a bad thing, your New Berlin-area home does need some of it. Ideally, moisture levels should fall between 25 and 35 percent in the winter and 48 and 58 percent in the summer. This prevents the air from drying out and causing problems like itchy skin and nosebleeds. Keeping humidity in those ranges also helps deter certain microorganisms—like mold and mildew—from thriving.
How to Lower Humidity in Your Home
Install a Whole-Home Dehumidifier
As its name suggests, a whole-home dehumidifier is designed for home humidity control. This system removes moisture from your air, helping you feel more comfortable without having to lift a finger. It can also help your home feel cooler even without your air conditioner running. In that way, dehumidifiers can actually help you save on cooling costs.
Utilize Your Air Conditioner
If you don’t have a dehumidifier, your A/C can help do the same thing. Its cooling effect can cancel out the high humidity, resulting in better comfort across your house.
Ventilate Your Home
Air ventilators can help lower humidity by sending stale indoor air outside. They can be especially helpful when installed in rooms where moisture is most common, such as attics and basements. You can also air out the house by simply opening a window and using fans to propel humid air outdoors.
Put in Weather Stripping
Sealing your doors and windows is a great way to control the temperature indoors. In the summertime, it can block cracks and prevent humid outdoor air from creeping inside—as well as keep cool air circulating for longer. And in the winter, it can keep the cold, dry air out, helping you achieve that ideal humidity level year-round.
